Post Number 500 and Something New

I have long been fascinated with glass and fusing glass and slumping glass and recently with lampwork. There are so many skills I want to learn...so part of my 2011 Promissio to myself is to experiment and continue learning to work with new materials and tools.
Top photo - 1st bead attempt. KaBoom.
Next: 2nd bead attempt. KaRack
Below: beads still on the mandrels. (Thought I should take a photo before I broke these also...)
TaDa! I made some lopsided ugly pokey beads and a couple of pretty marble looking beads.I feel good about it.
...:::~*~:::...
This really is my 500th post.
I could do a give-a-way and send some lucky winner a few lopsided, pokey, ugly beads, but what kind of contest would that be?

Are you putting your beads in a kiln or fiber blanket or vermiculite after torching them? The kiln is most ideal.
If you aren't that's why they're cracking.
The wonderful thing about lampwork is that it doesn't take long to show improvement. Keep it up, you'll be pleased.

Happy 500th post! Wonderful success, Rachel!
And there is nothing more fun than handmade beads made into something beautiful. Perfect beads might as well be made of plastic. I love your creations.

Congrats,

I sat and held a lamp work beginning kit in my hands two days ago at Hobby Lobby. Thought....stop buying new tools to try!! and thought if you are going to...don't buy it as a kit at hobby lobby! I think it's one of the most fascinating arts. I watched a demonstration for such a long time at the state fair once. I know you'll be turning out beautiful beads by the end of the month if not sooner!

congrats on 500!

can I tell you what I thought that first photo was when i just glanced at it? Ok, remember I just glanced, k?

I thought it was scraps of food (read: fruits like banana and apples) laying on top of your iced over lake. I'm not sure how an iced over lake would have those even ripple pattern looking things, but like I said...it was a glance.

then end.
